Mintlaw Academy pupils build ‘the Jungle VIP’

Aden Treehouse ProjectA group of pupils from Mintlaw Academy have been busy renovating a treehouse at Aden Country Park with a Jungle Book theme which was launched at the Aden Country Fair on Sunday, September 27.

Mintlaw Academy S2 pupils Sean Walker, Jay Shirreffs, Kieran Sivers and Ross Michie worked on the treehouse in partnership with local artist Melissa Arcaro of Arcaro Arts, Peterhead.

Jay said: “The Treehouse transformation has been a fun project.  We have worked together for quite a few months to finish it and we are so pleased with how it now looks.  It feels good to have done something for other people to enjoy.”

The group was set up as a project to offer additional transition support to S1 pupils on their move to Mintlaw Academy.

Now that the treehouse project has been completed the current team plans to make and donate garden furniture for local sheltered housing and care homes in the Buchan area.

The project forms part of a Bronze Youth Achievement Award that the pupils are working towards.

Youth Achievement Awards offer young people aged 14 and over with opportunities to develop across four levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum) with projects that allow them to gain confidence and new skills.

Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning and Leisure Committee Councillor Alison Evison said: “Taking part in the treehouse project has enabled the pupils to work as a team and support their learning in school by learning something new.

“Not only will the treehouse provide a great new facility for visitors to the park it is something the pupils will be proud of and will give them a sense of real achievement.”

Aden Treehouse ProjectChair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Buchan Area Committee Councillor Stuart Pratt said: “The projects that the pupils at Mintlaw Academy have undertaken as part of the achievement awards are a credit to the school and the pupils.

“I know that the treehouse will be enjoyed by people and visitors to the park and I look forward to seeing what they will work on next.”

Aden Country Park Development Worker Neil Shirran said: “The treehouse enhances the facilities at Aden and it was launched as part of the very successful heritage fair and vintage tractor day event.

“The treehouse enhances the facilities at Aden and it was launched as part of a very successful weekend event.
