Aden Recognised as One of Best Green Spaces
Aden Country Park at Mintlaw has again been recognised as one of the country’s best green spaces with a prestigious Green Flag Award.
The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and recognises well managed and high quality green spaces.
Aden’s win this year is the third in succession and makes it the most northerly recipient of the award in the UK.
It stood out after impressing judges with its excellent use of green space, well-maintained facilities and high standard of safety and security.
Green Flag Award Submissions must use and meet the eight award criteria:
• A welcoming place
• Healthy, safe and secure
• Clean and well-maintained
• Conservation and heritage
• Community involvement
Two judges were at the park in May and spent the best part of a day looking around and inspecting the various facilities.
Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee, Peter Argyle, said: "This is a fantastic achievement, a huge well done and all credit to the hard work and commitment from the staff involved.
“One of the aims of our country parks strategy is ‘to seek to achieve the highest possible standards consistent with the available resources including award status where achievable’.
“In line with this and the ongoing programme of improvement works at our four country parks, Aden was chosen as our initial application for a Green Flag award, though it is intended to enter further parks in the near future.”
Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd, said: “We are thrilled to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces.
“A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the achievements of all those whose hard work and dedication has helped to create these fantastic places for all to enjoy.
“I must also thank all this year’s 800-plus volunteer judges for their magnificent efforts in assessing an astounding number of applications.”
Communities Minister, Andrew Stunell, said: “Great parks and green spaces have a huge impact on local communities, providing places to play and relax as well as bringing generations together in a variety of ways.
“They are fundamental to our quality of life, whether in cities, towns or villages, and the Green Flag Award scheme seeks to help raise the standards of them all.
“The many excellent stories coming from the scheme prove what communities and volunteers can achieve by working together with professionals in our green spaces. Well done to all those involved in creating these inspirational places for everyone to enjoy.”
The Green Flag Award scheme continues to grow internationally with expansion into the Netherlands and Germany as part of ambitious pilot projects.
